School Garden

This garden design was created for Kermit T. Booker Elementary School in Las Vegas. It demonstrates several different gardening styles appropriate for the region and offers a flexible use space for processing harvests and outdoor classes. On the front end, facing the school, is a native edible plant matrix and wildlife habitat/pollinator refuge displaying wild grasses, cacti with edible fruit, edible wildflowers, native oaks and mesquite trees. Desert tree crops from around the world enclose the raised beds and field crop area. The garden offers many educational opportunities, including: hot climate orchard cultivation, native plant use and identification, food preservation, basic gardening skills and composting.
